When faced with a marketing challenge, big is not always better. However, there’s a sign I pass everyday that makes me smile.
How do you gain competitive advantage?
Situated in a large retail area in Nottingham, two competitors happen to be next door to each other, operating in exactly the same business sector. One company has chosen to simply display a massive sign telling everyone that their product is better.
It’s big, it’s brash and you can’t miss it. I asked a member of the team if it was working for them. He just smiled and said that the sign has paid for itself hundreds of times over.
“Customers go next door, get a quote and then just come in to our shop and we beat it. The customer is the winner and 9 times out of 10 we get the business,” says the employee.
We don’t all have the chance to be quite that brash, and there are of course plenty of other ways to get your message across to consumers. The key is in defining your message and communicating this in a clear manner – in this case, yes, big is better!
